7 Most Common Ailments that Require Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is beneficial for numerous medical conditions. Some of the common ailments in which physiotherapy is useful for the patients are also the most critical ones.

1.   Arthritis

Arthritis is a term used collectively for a group of 200 or more diseases affecting the joints. These diseases cause pain and inflammation to the joints and the surrounding tissues. Arthritis is a progressive disorder. Early detection and treatment are imperative for patients suffering from arthritis. A well-trained physio can help an arthritis patient improve the overall quality of life. The physiotherapist focuses on reducing pain, increasing the range of motion and increasing mobility. The therapist also intends to amend the workstation, wearables and lifestyle of the patient to prevent further injuries.

2.   Rehabilitation After Surgery

The physiotherapist can help the patient in many ways post the surgery. He can help the patient recover faster to get back to regular life. He can sketch personalized rehabilitation exercises for the patient.

Research shows that physiotherapy is beneficial prior to the surgery as well. Timely physiotherapy can even prevent or delay further requirement of surgeries.

3.   Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that affects muscle movement, coordination, motor skills and muscle tones. Physiotherapy stimulates and maintains optimal movement and physical functionalities. The physio tries to work on the physical limitations of the patient and encourages the patient to expand the bodily capabilities. He also makes changes in the surroundings to suit the patient.

4.   Herniation

Herniation or a slipped disk is a medical condition wherein the central and soft portion of the spine bulges out through a tear in the outer annulus. A patient suffering from herniation can greatly benefit from physiotherapy. Physiotherapy reduces the pain, improves spine movement and promotes physical functions.

5.   Vertigo and Dizziness

As per the symptoms of vertigo and dizziness, the patient feels lack of control and the local environment spinning while they roll over their heads, look backwards or stare downwards. These diseases might also cause blurred vision and nausea.

A physio experienced with vestibular rehabilitation and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) would be most suitable for these patients.

6.   Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects the dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain. This disease mostly hampers the movement of the body. It generally affects older people. Physiotherapy can improve flexibility, increase strength, reduce fatigue and improve the movement of the patient.

7.   Cervical Radiculopathy

Commonly known as "pinched nerve" disease, it occurs due to nerve compression at the neck. The compression forces the nerve to branch out opposite to the spinal cord. Physiotherapists aid the cervical radiculopathy patients by reducing the pain, correcting their posture and by providing functional training and exercises.
